UV TECHNOLOGY
How UV sanitisers work
Ultra-Violet (UV) light is categorised into UV-A, UV-B and UV-C based on wavelength. UV-C falls within 100 and 280 nm range, and has a germicidal effect. There is scientific evidence from over 40 years proving this. Low pressure UV-C lamps have their main emission at 254 nm with 85% UV-C output. These germicidal lamps are extremely effective in breaking down the DNA of micro-organisms. Microbes are unable to replicate resulting in disinfection.
The effectiveness of UVGI disinfection method is directly related to dosage used. High intensity for short duration or low intensity over a long period has almost similar disinfecting effects. Dosage are measured as µW*s/cm², and frequently also in Js/m².
A simple thumb rule, the simpler the microorganism, the easier it can be inactivated by UV radiation. Hence viruses or bacteria (prokaryotic) in general will be more easily destroyed than complex organisms such as yeasts, mold and vegetative fungi (eukaryotic).
